I had some spare time today, so I stopped by the local Chevy to take a look at the much-vaunted new Camaro. I’m not looking to buy, but this car made such a splash, I couldn’t resist meeting it in person. If I had to buy a new car today, it would be high on the short list.
This car had the RS and Convenience/Lighting packages, as well as the dual-mode exhaust, sunroof, and blah blah other electronics thingy options. 3.6L V6, 8-speed auto. I sat in it, and started it up.
Very first impression was, wow, the seats are soft! Not sure how this would play out in distance vs. enthusiast driving, but much cushier than the Miata or S2000. The (heated) steering wheel also had more padding to it, which is probably as much a sign of the times than anything about this car.
Visibility wasn’t as bad as I had expected, given the talk. Driver’s side visibility is pretty OK, with a bit of difficulty around the C pillar. Passenger side is a bit worse, because you’re farther away from the sliver of window. Out the front is OK as well, but it’s hard to know where the nose of the car is.
The long, skinny go-pedal is floor-mounted. I’m not sure about brake placement on the manual, but judging from this auto’s brake pedal, it was far enough away that a heel-toe would need to be literally with the heel, not the side of the foot.
I’m not sold on the styling of the rear haunches. The flare looked almost too artistic to me, from the side. Tail lights are “mean” and squinty looking, very angular.
Nothing about the car was a turnoff in the sit-down or walk-around.
